I would like to share an informative tip with you. You may wonder if salt ever expires. The short answer is that it does not, because the microbes that cause food poisoning and spoilage require water to grow, but there is no water in pure salt, so it never deteriorates. Additionally, salt is toxic to the majority of microbes. The U.S. Department of Agriculture states that salt lasts indefinitely if you store it in cool, dry conditions. However, the American company, Morton Salt, suggests that salt variants containing other ingredients, such as iodine, flavors, spices, or colors, for example, can go bad over time. Most salt variants are made up of other compounds, not just sodium chloride like in pure salt. For instance, mineral impurities give Himalayan salt its pink color and there are small amounts of algae in unrefined sea salt and iodine in iodized salt. Furthermore, Kosher salt, table salt and other kinds contain anti-caking agents that can deteriorate with time, causing clumping. The added compounds won’t remain fresh forever; therefore, the salt won’t either. However, they don’t spoil or lead to foodborne illnesses. If you choose to consume this salt after its use-by date, it won’t hurt you, it just won’t be the best quality.
