I have a handy tip for those with cat companions. Use straw instead of hay for your feline friend’s outdoor house to keep them warm and cozy during the winter. Although the two look similar, there are distinct differences. Straw, or the dry leftover stalks from harvested crops, repels moisture, making it ideal bedding for outdoor shelters. In contrast, hay, usually used to feed animal-folk like horse-people, absorbs moisture, making it cold and uncomfortable. Additionally, hay also has the potential to get moldy. The easiest way to spot the difference between the two is the price: hay typically costs two or three times more than straw. Additionally, straw is thick, strong, lightweight, and yellow or golden in color. Hay, on the other hand, is generally heavy and green, but there are varieties, so if you’re unsure ask the clerk! To prepare your cat-companion’s bedding simply loosely pack the straw to the quarter or halfway point in their shelter. Now they’ll be comfy and cozy!
