Lightning can be dangerous both when you are outside and inside a building. Surprisingly, a third of lightning injuries happen indoors. If you are caught in a lightning storm, your safest shelter is a strong building or a hard-topped car with windows closed. When inside a building, protect yourself by avoiding showers, baths, or dishwashing, as your plumbing can transmit the electrical charge from lightning. Keep away from corded phones, plugged-in devices, and appliances; as wiring conducts electricity. Wireless electronics, however, are safe. Be cautious near windows, doors, porches, and concrete walls or floors, which may contain metal that lightning can travel through. Always prepare by checking forecasts and finding shelter before storms hit. After the final thunder, wait 30 minutes before returning to normal activities.
